Alberta Artists with Brain Injury Society consists of adult survivors of acquired brain injury, caregivers and support workers, as well as volunteers and friends of AABIS.
Our primary purpose is to provide a supportive place for the therapeutic creation of art. Through the act of doing art, individuals express themselves and relearn who they are – their style, interests, likes and feelings. The art works vary from simple to outstanding without any judgments as the survivors advance along the path of discovery, and peaceful enjoyment – a benefit to the individuals, their families and the community.
AABIS promotes the art work of brain injury survivors through exhibits and sales. With our art and public presentations, we help raise community awareness about acquired brain injury and the therapeutic benefits of doing art (ie: cognitive, physical, emotional, social).
Our organization is member run. We seek to establish a broad-base art network with service providers and organizations that support persons with disabilities.
